Pepper chicken is a commonly made chicken recipe. It is mostly made as a dry dish. But I like to make a them with a little gravy for my coconut milk crepes(paaladai) or chapatis. I have tried many recipes for pepper chicken and none of them satisfied me as much as this recipe. Try it and find out why.

  • Chicken – 1/2 kg
  • Lemon juice – 1 tbsp
  • Oil
  • Onions chopped- 2
  • Tomato chopped – 1
  • Ginger Garlic Paste – 1 tbsp
  • Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp
  • Coriander powder – 1 tsp
  • Garam masala powder – 1 tsp
  • Crushed Black pepper – 2 tsp
  • Curry leaves
  • Coriander for garnish
  • Salt to taste

1. Marinate the medium sized chicken pieces in lemon juice and 2 tsp black pepper for 30 minutes.

2. In a pan, heat oil and add in the whole spices. Add the onions, curry leaves and ginger garlic paste. Sauté for a minute till onions turn golden.

3. Add in the chopped tomatoes. When they become mushy, add turmeric powder and coriander powder.

4. Mix in the marinated chicken and add garam masala. Add salt. Sauté for 3 minutes.

5. Add 1/2 cup of water and close the lid. Allow the chicken to cook for 5 minutes.

6. If the gravy is watery, allow it to boil to evaporate excess water. Adjust the consistency to your liking.

7. Pepper chicken is ready. Garnish it with coriander leaves and serve with chapati, roti or rice.
