Chana Masala is a famous dish made all over India. It is mostly made as a side dish for puris, chapatis and aapams too. In the south, they are also made for puttu. Chana Masala is a delicious and nutritious dish of which the main ingredient is chickpeas. It is high in protein and hence a boost for our health. I prefer making them once or twice a week as my tot loves them too.

For 2 persons,

Ingredients –

  • 1/2 cup dried chickpeas
  • 3tbsp oil
  • 1 large onion
  • 1 ripe tomato pureed
  • Cinnamon, cardommon and cloves
  • 1 tsp ginger garlic paste
  • 1/2 tsp chilli powder
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  • 2 tsp coriander powder
  • 1 tsp garam masala powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 potato (optional)
  • Mint leaves


1. Soak the chana or chickpeas overnight.

2. In a pressure cooker, heat oil and add in whole spices. Add in the chopped onions and ginger garlic paste. Sauté for a minute.

3. In a blender add the tomato and puree it. Add the tomato puree to the onions and sauté till raw smell goes.

4. Add in the chilli powder, turmeric powder, coriander powder and garam masala powder. Sauté for a minute and add in the chickpeas and salt.

5. Add in mint leaves and chopped potatoes. Add water. Close the cooker and allow for 4 whistles on medium flame.

Chana curry is ready to be served. Serve it with chapati or aapams.

Tips –

1. If the curry is watery, mash some potato cubes and the gravy will become thick.

2. You  can also add 1 tsp chana masala which is available in grocery stores.
